  • What is the Hike n Fly Switzerland system for?

    The system supports you, your helpers and the athletes in paragliding competitions with

    Registration >> Payment processing >> Raceday check in >> Live tracking >> Live ranking

    It is most beneficial if you use all components.
    In exceptional cases, registration can be omitted (upload of a participant file by an admin). The payment process is not required for free training sessions or races. If your regulations are so complex that automatic evaluation is not possible, you can use the ‘Livetracking only’ mode. In this case, live ranking is omitted.

  • Can I use the system for my race or event?

    Yes, of course! Just give it a try.

  • Can I also use the system for other races or events such as runs, trail runs, mountain bike races, regattas, etc.?

    Basically yes. Due to the limited accuracy of the GPS position measurement, the accuracy of the time measurement is also limited. Expect system-related inaccuracies of +/- 5 seconds on average.

  • Does it cost anything to use the system?

    You can use the system free of charge for free events. If your race includes an entry fee, a service fee will be charged. Please get in touch with us.

  • How reliable is the livetracking?

    The livetracking is generally very reliable. However, if a 'gap' occurs, it can be corrected with an igc file or manually - see below (Raceday) for details.

  • Can I manage the race paperless with the system?

    Yes, we would like to encourage you to do everything in the system and avoid printouts, separate lists, etc.

  • Can I use the system with my smartphone?

    Yes, all features are accessible on a smartphone browser.

  • In which languages is the system available?

    The inscription and payment, the FAQ and the Android and iOS apps are provided in English, German and French. The backend is currently only available in English.

  • Can I get support if I have problems with the system?

    While we do our best to assist and help you, please understand that our resources are limited. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

  • Can I handle registration fees independently?

    No, this is not allowed.

Set up your race more
  • How do I set up a race/event?

    Please create an account using your email as an identifier. Follow the prompts to define parameters, categories, and turnpoints on a map. Finally share the entry link and / or use the button code to embed a registration button on your website.
    Try to keep your race as simple as possible. You will save yourself and the athletes unnecessary problems and it will be more fun for everyone. For example, avoid overlapping turnpoints (TPs), too many TPs, extremely large or small TPs, too many categories, special rules, etc.

  • What types of races are supported?

    We support 'score race,' 'race to goal,' and 'out and return,' as described in the Swiss Hang Gliding Association (SHV) Hike and Fly regulations. Briefly: In 'score race,' the order of turnpoints is freely chosen, and each reached turnpoint earns points. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. In 'race to goal,' the order of turnpoints is predetermined, and the winner is the first to reach the goal. If someone doesn't reach the goal, the remaining distance is considered. In 'out and return,' the goal is to go as far from the start as possible and return in time. The winner is the one who has gone the farthest (as the crow flies) and returns on time.

  • Can I configure custom evaluation settings?

    You can define the radius for each turnpoint and whether it must be reached on the ground or may be flown over. You can also assign an individual score for each turnpoint (in the Score Race). Additional tasks (special rules such as precision landings, selfie posts, etc.) are also possible. If an athlete fulfils these, your helpers can enter this in the system and the additional points appear in the live ranking in real time. Penalty points can also be recorded (e.g. airspace or game protection violations). Even if your race has a lot of special rules, you can still use our system: Simply use the ‘Live tracking only’ mode - without automated evaluation and without a ranking list.

  • How can I define turnpoints?

    Easy to do in the Turnpoints module on a map: Tap on the location, set the name, radius, and details. Alternatively, you can also upload a *.xctsk with a task in the fourth tab.

  • Should I set the start as a turnpoint?

    No, please don't. This is not necessary and can interfere with the evaluation, especially in score races and if the finish is at the same place as the start.

  • What is the purpose of the list view of turnpoints?

    Use it to change your turnpoints, especially their order. Note that the goal must always be last, i.e., at the bottom. If you are doing a 'race to goal,' the order is crucial. Arrange the order from top to bottom.

  • Can I copy the turnpoints of a category?

    Yes, if the tasks of your categories are very similar or even the same, copying is much easier. The best thing to do is to define just one category and copy it at the end. You will find the copy function on the third tab in the Turnpoints module.

  • Can I open the registration and set the turnpoints later?

    No, please set at least provisional turnpoints right from the start. If not, the athletes will see inconsistent results or even errors when trying out the app.

  • Can I set up restricted access for helpers?

    Yes, you can set a password for the helpers. The helpers can use it to log in to https://hike-n-fly.ch/llsa/ and only have access to the Raceday module. Instead of an email, helpers enter the event code.

  • How do I inform athletes that registration is now open?

    Send them a registration link. If you have a website, you can also place a registration button there. You can find the link and the code in the Inscription module. The button turns red and inactive when the registration deadline has expired or the maximum number has been reached.

  • Can I set up a discount for a special person?

    Yes, this is possible in the Inscription module. You need to know the email with which this person will register. Click on the Discount button and enter the email and the desired discount (1-100%).

  • Will I receive an email when someone registers?

    Yes.

  • An athlete wants to change category. How do I register this?

    Please use the corresponding button in the Inscription module.

  • How does unsubscription work?

    Participants can use the cancellation link included in the registration confirmation email. Deregistrations can also be managed in the Inscription module. The system allows deregistration in two steps: 1. Cancel - the person disappears from the start list and the live ranking, but remains visible in the backend. This can also be undone. Useful if you still want to make refunds or credit notes, for example. 2. Delete permanently: This permanently deletes all registration data for the person concerned.

  • Can athletes download task files?

    Yes. Tip: only share the link (found in the Inscription module) after the task is finalised.

  • What should I tell athletes about technical equipment?

    Encourage athletes to fully charge their smartphone and to bring a power bank. You can also recommend or even demand that the athletes make an igc recording on a second device to be on the safe side (e.g. their variometer).

  • Should I suggest that athletes do a test run with the app?

    Yes, absolutely. However, you should delete the test recordings in the Inscription module (red button 'Delete track data') before the race (e.g. 1 hour before the start) to prevent disturbances of the ranking.

  • Can I integrate the livetracking, the start list and the liveranking into my website?

    Yes, find the code in the Inscription module.

  • Does the system support check-in before the start?

    Yes, it's best done by using the 'Digital Signature of the Regulations and Disclaimer' service (see below). It also provides you with an overview of who is actually present.

  • Does the system support signing of the disclaimer?

    Yes, in the Raceday module athletes can sign digitally. This is possible on all touch-enabled devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop with a touchscreen).

  • Can I record last-minute cancellations or people who do not turn up (no-show) or give up the race early?

    Yes, in the Inscription module.

  • Can I change the race task during the race?

    Yes, but avoid changing turnpoints already reached. Inform athletes about changes.

  • Can I check during the race whether the live tracking of all athletes is working?

    Yes, use the Raceday module. Behind each name or the row of buttons you will find the time of the last GPS recording. If this was a long time ago, three exclamation marks will also appear. You can also search for these three exclamation marks in the search field at the top. For longer interruptions: Call the athlete and ask him/her to check the live tracking and restart it.

  • Is there a spectator view that is optimised for large screens (e.g. in the Hombase)?

    Yes, you can find the link for the 'big-screen-view' in your admin area. At the top of your race overview and in the Inscription/Preparation module under 'Links'. The big-screen view combines live tracking and live ranking on one large screen. This view is not suitable for small screens (smartphones).

  • How do I locate and contact athletes in trouble?

    Use the Raceday module: Click on the name in the first section to locate the athlete. Click on 'contact' right next to it to call him/her.

  • Can I manually rectify errors in turnpoint registration?

    Yes, use the link in the Raceday module. If you come from there, you are automatically logged in as an admin there and can add or delete turnpoints for individual athletes.

  • Can I upload an igc-file to add any missing sections?

    Yes, when logged in as admin, click on the athlete's name on the ranking page. You will find the upload buttons below. You can also upload multiple files. All points (from the app and the igc file or igc files) are merged into a single track.

After the race more
  • How long are race data available online?

    We keep the ranking data (leaderboard with all times) and the signatures for 11 months after the finish. Until then, the ranking is available online. Track data and igc-files are deleted two months after the finish.

  • Can I use a past race as a template for a new one?

    Yes, copy the key values of a race (parameters, categories, tasks, turnpoints) and then modify them. Please note, however, that the race will be irretrievably deleted after 11 months.
